Those of you of a certain age (well, an ADVANCED age) will remember
the comic The Nearsighted Mr. Magoo. I
will try to post a picture of the poor fellow, but regardless he was short,
bald, and squinty – a bit like I have become, but better looking. I bring this up because, I realize, the way I
am squinting at this new computer, as well as cocking my head to bring my bifocals
into play, must look a bit comic. It appears
that I have age-related macular degeneration – and it seems to be coming on
fast. This accounts for the fact that I
found this article interesting.
It seems that MedSci now can convert ordinary skin cells
into Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, then persuade these dudes to become the
kind of stuff that is degenerating in Macular Degeneration. Seems to work on rodents; a humanoid trial
will ensue. Too late for me, obviously,
but perhaps a boon to the legions of old farts that will follow me.
